Hey forum – I just volunteered to help someone pro bono who needs their RED footage converted to a place where their editor can edit it.

Now I’m looking through the forum, and thinking “what have I got myself in to?”

Are there any straight forward guides that you can recommend? I’m on Snow Leopard with FCP7, and have a very strong Mac Pro (3.33GHz six core with 16GB RAM). I need to convert the files so that another editor using FCP7 can just open the project and start cutting.

    Thanks so much!!!!!

https://postproduction.pbworks.com/w/file/fetch/47282529/RED%20Workflow.pdf as a common workflow spelled out… it recommends you have a red rocket card, but it will work without one (just slower renders).

Thank you Jerry! I’ll check that link out. Just found out the footage was part RED and part RED EPIC.

    Just great….

You can use the log and transfer tool as long as you have the RED plug in to convert the RED ONE R3D files to Quicktime.

However the EPIC is not supported in this way so you will need to use REDCINE X to transcode the EPIC files – of course you can do both RED and EPIC in REDCINE.

Both are on the RED support site.

Thanks man. Question: in the export settings in RED CINE, I want to create Pro Res files for FCP, and I’m creating full quality ones because they may not go back to the raw files for any reason on this footage.

They said they shot to allow push in on some of the shots which means i can’t resize the footage to 1920×1080. What is the normal frame size for Epic? Or rather, do you have a recommendation for a frame size? If the DP shot the frame because the director wanted to push in to fake some close ups, I guess I need to do the full freaking thing?

The options go all of the way up to 5120 x 2700. YIKES.

Max frame size in FCP7 is 2k so not much room for a push in. I would just go for 1920 x 1080 but reconnect to the r3d files for grading. Do all the reframes in Color or daVinci with the 5k files and then output can be 4k,2k or HD.

The important thing is to maintain the file names exactly when converting to ProRes. With this workflow you can use ProRes422 or LT. The power of grading the r3ds is the ability to manipulate ISO and color temp in the grade plus the full exposure range.
