FCP and external hard drive troubles
I was using FCP 6 to edit a video, saving everything to an external hard drive. Everything was going fine until I left my computer for a while and came back to a black screen. Somehow my computer crashed. When I turned it back on and reconnected my external hard drive, this message came up:
“The disk “IMG 500-003″ was not repairable by this computer. It is being made available to you with limited functionality. You must back up your data and reformat the disk as soon as possible.”
I pressed ‘ok’ and tried to get into my FCP file which opened easily but when I try to save (using ‘save’ OR ‘save as’), a message pops up saying:
“File Error: The specified file is locked”
I looked at the disk permissions for the external and they are now read-only.
If I repair disk permissions for the external, will I lose all of my work? Is this even the right course of action?

You can’t just drag and drop the files from the failing drive to another location? That’s where I’d start. Check the copies by opening them.

You need to acquire and run Disk Warrior on that drive ASAP, and then get everything off of it. Even if it seems as though it’s fine after running DW, I would not trust it. It sounds as if the drive’s power supply may be failing.

Unfortunately, it’s a work hard drive so I have nowhere to move the files (they must go onto this drive and be returned). Looks like I may need to just return the drive for a new one if the power supply is failing?

I agree with the power supply. If it’s not the power supply, Data Rescue from ProSoft may be able to help.
