MPEG-1, mp4 for web and/or YouTube?
Newbie. I thought that mp4 was supposed to be superior to MPEG-1 for the web. However, I exported two versions of the same FCP file using Compressor and I’m a little surprised by what I got.
Both are 320×240 at 29.97fps. I think I used the IMA 4:1 audio option for the MPEG-1 audio and the mp4 is AAC (by default?). The MPEG-1 is 90mb and the mp4 is 108mb.
MPEG-1 seems a little sharper and the audio is both hotter and contains more hi frequency content. Both look like sh*t on YouTube. It’s not like the footage was that great to begin with, but the loss of quality is still disappointing. Seems like there are a few advantages to using YT, though, including mobile delivery.
I’d sure appreciate any guidance, tips, tricks, links that you’re willing to share. Thanks.

That you mean the audio, don’t you?
Standard MPG- has a data-rate of around 1.2 Mbps (audio&Video).
At that data-rate a 320×240 MP4/H264 should look as good as the original.
You are doing something wrong somewhere or using a wrong Preset.
