Standards Conversion
Hey Guys,
Trying to set up an efficient workflow in regards to standards conversion.
Is there any known current software applications or add-ons that can convert PAL->NTSC or vice versa on the fly out there?
I knew of a few ways in the past which only converted video/timecode but not audio.
Basically want a quicker workflow rather than passing through two digi decks.Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated

If the footage is of decent quality, Avid MC 5.5 can convert on the fly.
In fact I am doing it right now.

yes, it will be a professional set-up. Do you mind explaining the process through avid in more detail?

It’s very simple. Import your footage into bins in a PAL project, then create an NTSC project. Open the bins you made in the PAL project in the NTSC project and edit.
It’s really that simple. The realtime conversion is quite good for general footage, but you have the option of other modes that require rendering, if you need to improve the conversion quality.

That definitly sounds like an option.
Also, I should have mentioned that the footage will be used for broadcast internationally.

I am working on a show that will air all of the world right now and it seems to be doing the job.
Avid offers a 30 day free trial that’s fully functional. You can download it and test it with your footage.

Update: Downloaded the Trial version of Avid and gave it a whirl today.
Opened the PAL (720×567) footage in a 25i project and then imported the PAL bin into an NTSC 24p project then exported with dimensions 720×486.
Is that the correct setup for NTSC or is there another method of setting up the NTSC project so that it plays at 29.97fps.
Do you mind posting an insight of your project specs? I suppose it generally comes down to what is requested by client.

There is no setup. No settings to fiddle with. Just edit.
Just open the bin containing PAL footage in your NTSC project. When you cut it into an NTSC timeline, Avid takes care of the rest using what it calls Motion Adapters.
This is an FCP forum so we should not delve too deeply into Avid tech support here.
