50p AVCHD transcode to ProRes 422 problem

Hi All

I have encountered a problem trying to Log and Transfer / transcode 1080 50p AVCHD footage (shot on a Sony FS100) to Apple ProRes 422 using FCP7

Can anyone suggest a good workflow for this kind of transcode as I am struggling to find any solutions online

1080p50 and 1080p60 are formats not supported by FCP importers. It is a very non standard format. Really only exists to make smooth slow motion, because at 1080, the frame rate is 25fps, or 30fps in the US. Not 50fps. Tape doesnt support it, nor does the web, nor DVD or BluRay.

You can use ClipWrap2 to convert. It will do it.

Hi Marcus,
There is a little Script call “Rewrap2M4V” that works with the PANA1080p50/60 stuff
and allows to open the files in QT and make easy the transcoding.
That might help you. Give it a try.

Thanks for your help. I have downloaded ClipWrap and am successfully transcoding the 50p AVCHD clips to ProRes 422

However, when I take the transcoded 50p ProRes 422 clips into Cinema Tools to conform to 25p, the Conform button is greyed out

If you’ve just used ClipWrap on the files, then they haven’t been transcoded, they’ve only been rewrapped. The video codec is still AVCHD, which isn’t a codec that Cinema Tools supports for conforming.

If you want to reconform them in Cinema Tools you will have to take the rewrapped QTs into Compressor or some other app and transcode them to ProRes, which will obviously take time.

Just FWIW, Toast Titanium will take native AVCHD files and allow direct transcoding to any codec that exists on your system with no need to rewrap first. It’s more expensive than ClipWrap though.

ONLY if they chose the REWRAP option.

But yes…you need to choose the ProRes 422 option in ClipWrap…

Aha, I didn’t know that ClipWrap could transcode, I thought it just rewrapped.

If the “conform” button in Cinema Tools is greyed out, though, then it’s a fair bet that the OP has only rewrapped, not transcoded. Either that, or Cinema Tools is corrupt and needs reinstalling.

Many thanks – I had the same problem. I used PavTube to convert MTS files (from a Sony Nex-7) and although the exporeted 422 Quicktime *seemed* okay on inspection – the “conform” button was still greyed out after importing into in Cinema Tools. As an intermediate step – I used Compressor (Custom setting I created using 50fps, 422), before going to Cinema Tolls and hey presto – very grateful!
