  Dolby E Passthrough and Closed Captions?

  Our show works like this: We get a master tape from the network. We ingest with VANC captions. We bring that into FCP7 and create graphics to go on top of the video. We reoutput the video back to the master tape, same timecode, using AJA and a Sony SRW-5500 HDCAM SR deck with HDCAM tapes. We DO NOT output audio or timecode, just the video and VANC captions. The audio remains untouched.

  Our most recent tape from the network includes Dolby E encoding. Do we have to do anything to retain the Dolby E, or will it just remain on the tape? I’m wary of this because the captions get blown off the tape when we re-output. It also causes our captions to be 608 (ANC) instead of 708. Is that an issue?

  In my experience (using KONA hardware with FCP) you can capture Dolby E tracks and output them back to tape with no issue. Don’t punch though – if you’re going back to tape, you need to have a continuous E stream, so start well before the program and cut out well after.
