  HD filming, editing, exporting & planning properties

  I need help with settings from start of filming, importing to FCP, editing, exporting (compressor), to DVD Pro for the best quality and standard industry professional finish.
  I’ve attempted to find the best answers but still struggling. I’ve spent 2 full days at this and I keep getting a DVD with loss of quality…too much for my eye and ear.

  I film with a Panasonic P2HD in 1080i/50i HD
  I import to FCP with Format DVCPRO HD – 1080i50 – 25.00 fps

  Once edited I need to know what settings to use:

  a) for my Sequence settings (rendering and ready for export)
  b) for Compressor settings
  C) for DVD Pro settings to create the DVD

  Any good advice will be greatly appreciated. I’m assuming there are multiple possibilities. For a 12 minute video it takes me 45 minutes to render and 45 min to export. I really want to set up my ‘system’ as I’m doing a lot of these.

  a) Your sequence settings generally should match your footage. DVCProHD is a great codec, so working in a DVCProHD 1080i50 timeline is a great option.

  b) What do you mean “for Compressor settings”? I assumed you meant for DVD, but that is your 3rd question. If you mean for a Master file, all you have to do is export out of FCP. File > Export > Quicktime Movie. Export a self-contained file at Current Settings.

  C) I created a tutorial for exporting to DVD a while ago. Of course, adapt it for your PAL footage.

  Thanks for the quick reply Rob.
  That all makes sense.
  I’ve also included a number of motion files in the video. These files seem to be the ones with the greatest loss of quality.
  Is this a rendering issue (when in FCP)?

  I wouldn’t bring Motion files into FCP. Well, not for the final edit. Export Lossless Quicktimes out of Motion and bring those into FCP. I do it all the time, it works great.
