My trusty companion(my laptop) of the past 6 years has died and I need to replace him. Looking at the specs on the Apple page I see that the higher end models have 2 graphics cards. What is up with this? Does that mean improved performance when running pro video applications?

Yes it does… the new machines have integrated (on the logic board) graphics, and a dedicated graphics processors. When needed the dedicated kicks in automatically and improves performance of the Pro Apps.

I have a new 17″ and it’s FASTER than my 3 Gig 8 Core machine. I heartily recommend an SSD startup disk. the 17″ I have will start up in about 6 seconds, launch FCP 7 in about 5… fast.

This has been the case for a while with intel procs.

Jerry, I’ve never heard of being able to have them both work in concert, is so that’d be cool. My understanding is that they work one at a time.

You can force/choose which one to use in energy saver. The onboard processor uses less power but isn’t as beefy, the dedicated is more powerful and uses more battery power.

Make sure to get Thunderbolt, and sorry to hear about your friend.

I”m sure they don’t run in concert, the dedicated processor just takes over.
