  RED/Anamorphic lens workflow with Final Cut Pro 7

  I am working with footage shot on a RED one camera using Hawk anamorphic lenses. As we have quite a lot of footage I have been using Red Rushes to create 1280×720 proxies for use in the offline edit.

  The settings in Red Rushes are set as follows:
  Half Res (High) with external Timecode, Look source is on camera, colour space and gamma space on look source and the ourtput set to 1280×720 Prores 422HQ set to fit width.

  I then imported the files into final cut and ticked the anamorphic option in the browser.

  It all seemed to be going okay and the aspect ratio looks right, but the image is definitely squashed. (The actors look abnormally thin and tall.) It might also be important to note that the footage I received was 4/3 and not 16/9.

  Please can someone send me some pointers on what I could be doing wrong and how I can fix this problem?

  Leave the anamorphic box alone. You should distort the image to give you a letterbox in the 1280×720 frame.

  That anamorphic checkbox is SD PAR only.

  I didn’t think RED could shoot a 4:3 aspect ratio. Are you sure about that?

  You will probably have to set a custom distort and size value in the motion tab. As Jeremy said, don’t use the anamorphic flag in FCP.

  Once you have the correct ratio os size and distort, copy that clip and paste attributes to all clips. Get the crew to shoot a test chart with a circle to do the line up.
