HD-DVD Consumer Playback Machine
I burned a HD DVD video using Apple DVD STudio Pro (7). It plays back great in my other Mac Pro and my Mac book Pro.
I would like to point the client at a consumer player that would play it back. Now that the HD format wars are behind us, has anybody found a consumer Blu Ray player that also plays back the HD-dvd.
My Sony S300 Blu Ray after the firmware upgrades does not and the Sony S380 Blu Ray will play the AVCDVD, and mpg 4 / H264 video but not the HD-DVD video.
Anybody discovered a format neutral, plays everything HD player on the market??????

Doesn’t exist. HD-DVD lost the format war, players for that format are no longer being made or sold. Toshiba was the brand. Sorry, the HD DVD will only play on your computer, or an HD DVD player.

The only player that the Hd-DVD is playing on is the MacPro and the Mac Book Pro.
Do the HD-DVDs play in the newer PCs? I have been told that the VLC player/video/app will play them back on both PC and Mac. I do not have an up to date PC to check it on. My older PC Laptop does not recognize the disk. I have the VLC software working on my edit Mac Pro.
The Sony S380 BluRay Player that I just purchased is doing a great job of playing back the HD H264 files. IT plays back the larger of the versions when you use Quicktime Share for web and it saves three versions in a folder. I do not know yet how large a H264 HD data stream it can handle yet, but I think I am going to find out.
I had 20 HD – DVDs / Blu Rays to do for the family. A dollar per blank DVD is way better than BluRays 5 bucks per blank. I do corporate video, the DVD was so much better than VHS. You had something to put in their hand. A download/streaming from the web is great and accomplishes the contract, but the clients still want something in their hand. VHS had the best weight/feel. DVD hits all the marks but, heft. Blu Ray has been it own worst enemy. My clients still do not have Blu Ray players in the office or the home.
What is being used to share hardcopies of HD video with the family, corporate market. The new Sony S380 is not a bad player and it played the H264 files. Is this the trend, to replace old dvd players with a BluRay player at 150 bucks that plays all HD files except HD-DVD?? Oh and these HD beautiful movies are on 1 dollar blanks…….

Yes, the iPad is the golden ring for playing video. And the cloud services like Vimeo the perfect delivery vehicle. I do not use tape at all anymore. My corporate/government clients are throttled by outdated equipment. They still want something on their desk, not desk top. My clients do not have a download and archive mindset. Their shelves and traditional filing patterns involve physical media.
Is it possible if HD-DVD is dead and a cheap BluRay player will play back avcHD, that avcHD could replace the SD-dvd with HD on the same 1dollar blank. Or maybe I am mixed up with the acronyms, is avcHD the same as mpeg2-HD? Is avcHD the same as mpeg4 / H264.
I am just searching for an affordable mass duplicated video media that I can put on the clients desk. USB Flash drives are the trendy best, but you can not plug them into everything, yet. BluRay blanks 4 or 5 times more than regular DVD blanks. And you can not repurpose the dvd, as with the flash drive. So the dvd still wins. Is anyone successfully putting HD video (AVC_HD) on dvds. Success in terms of client playback.

A lot of our work ends up web only too.
If a Client wants a DVD, they get a SD-DVD. We shoot/archive on HD.When the time comes and they want a master on Bluray, no problem, here it is. Where ya been? Now they can see true HD quality.
