FCP Stops Recognizing Auido
Hello all –
I’m an editor living and working in Washington, DC and I’ve run across an issue I’ve never encountered before.
I have FCP 7.03 running on a Mac Pro (OS 10.608 – Dual Core 2.66) with 32GB of RAM. I’m also running audio though a Native Instruments Audio Kontrol 1 USB 2.0 interface into Mackie HR824 powered monitors.
While cutting in FCP, the audio will stop. By stop I mean, no sound and no levels. ITunes still plays. So, it’s not like the sound on the computer isn’t working.
I’ve tried toggling the audio formats in the system settings, a/v setting, etc. but this will only sometimes solve the issue temporarily.
If I restart the program it will work for a while but inevitably goes back “no sound” & “no levels” even though video playback is fine.
Please advise!!!

When you say no levels, you’re talking about the audio meters in FCP? Do they too cut out?

Exactly – no levels in the FCP audio meters. I re-installed last night, but the same issue occurred. However, after re-installing, the Drop Frame warning (which I had turned off) started piping up. Could it be that there’s just too much going on and the system is loosing track? I started cutting with only one or two sequences open at a time and it has gotten better…

No, I think you have plenty of computer… All of your media should be on a drive other than the startup disk (Mac HD disk)… also if your install wasn’t done cleanly, that might make a world of difference. (wipe the drive install the OS etc… and do it all clean) I do this about every 9 months or so, or any time I upgrade an OS or upgrade the NLE software, and it’s served me really well…
What is the format of the audio/video you’re working with? That could be part of the problem.

I do have all of my media on a separate internal drive and the Mac HD backed up with Time Machine.
I like the idea of “un-gooing” the system with a clean instal…. Are you suggesting I wipe the Mac HD, re-install snow leopard, then drag in important content (fcp files, iTunes Library, etc.) from the Time machine back up? I’ve had this machine for a good while and recently opted to upgrade the RAM rather than get a new machine.
This current project is XDCam EX 1080p30 (on a 23.98 time line). I didn’t shoot or convert the footage, but I believe it was shot on a 7D. I was having the same issue with footage sot on 7D but converted to ProRes and ProRes LT.
I really appreciate your insights.
