Serious Upgrade Issue
I’ve been working on a doc for four years, so when FCP 7 came out I decided to wait before upgrading. I figured any future upgrades would be backwards compatible. Silly me! It simply didn’t occur to me that apple would issue an “upgrade” that wouldn’t open previous projects.
So now I have a project nearing completion in FCP 6.0.6 and heading into post. I’m assuming most post houses will stick with FCP 7, so as soon as they open the project in 7 i will no longer be able to work on it. Dave, I says to myself, just go out and buy the upgrade and use it as your legacy machine. Oops! can’t do that either. Apple’s not selling it any more, amazon says they’re not sure if they can get it from apple (even though they were saying it was in stock on their web site) and there’s only one upgrade on ebay and the price is going up as we speak. I’ve scoured independent sellers here in NYC (Tekserve, B&H) and haven’t found it yet. and even if I do, not sure if I will be able to get the update pack.
any other suggestions? this is a nightmare, the worst possible scenario for a project I’ve been working for so long. what would you do if you were me?

I suppose I may have to buy the full version (if in fact it is still available.) Wouldn’t that be a kick in the pants, to pay $1,000 for a program that you know will never be upgraded and will sooner or later be unusable?

Well Sears of all places says it’s in stock. A bit more expensive than usual but far less than a grand. Worth a shot if you think it’s legit and call them about it:

Ask for the post house to either do their work in FCP 6 (I still have a couple of drives around with Version 6 installed for these types of occasion) or you can get them to export an XML of the final sequence so you can open it in older versions of FCP.

You can export an XML from FCP7 that lets you open the project in 6.
That said, I would make sure you secure an FCS3 upgrade ASAP anyway. Although it has caught many people out, it has been Apples policy in the past to discontinue sales of older version when a new version comes out, so the only real difference here is that FCP X can’t open old versions, a stunningly stupid move on Apples part. Otherwise it is business as usual.
