field dominance question
Hi. I have inherited a project (so I don’t know where all this material originated) but my timeline is 1080i.
I have clips that are HD resolution with the DVC Pro NTSC codec and they are set to lower field dominance. I believe they were originally standard def. Then I have other video that is set to None field dominance. The majority of the video is set to Upper. I know my timeline should be upper if I’m doing 1080i but does that mean that the field dominance of my clips needs to match?Also much of the footage originated in 24p and was later changed to 29.97 with upper field dominance. Can interlacing be added to a progressive clip like that? My initial thought is that if it’s progressive to begin with you can’t really add interlacing. Any thoughts on whether this sounds ok or will be an issue? Should it have been done differently and worth a recapture? I think they changed it because they have to deliver in 29.97.

Proressive footage will look progressive whenever you read it as Upper, Lower or NONE.
As long as there is no movement difference between the two fields of the same frame.The problem start when you process Progressive as interlaced and you add any kind of animated effect that’s grows “field by field”: The effect will be applied with different intensity at both fields.
That if you do not mix it with interlaced stuff.That complicates thing sand you will need de-interlace to make look progressive again.
