720p sync
I’m having an issue with sync. I have footage shot at both 1920×1080 and 1280×720. I have FCP 7. The footage is from a Sony F3 so it is XDCAM. I have edited a sequence in both XDCAM and ProRes at 1920×1080 and everything is fine when it plays back, the sync is right on in the external monitor.
However, when I edit the same footage in a timeline that is 1280×720 my monitor is WAY out of sync. I want to edit at 1280×720 since MOST of the footage in the spot was shot at 720. Also the only shot at 1080 I want to scale up and zoom in a bit, so I figured editing in a 720 timeline will give me more latitude. The audio for the spot is coming from the footage shot at 1080, the video from the footage shot was at 720 in overcrank. Only one scene has both the audio and video that was shot at 1080, and by the time that scene plays it is out of sync in the 720 timeline.
I have tried many things to fix this sync issue. I have an AJA KONA LH control panel, which is set at a 720p format, same as the output on my FCP control panel. I have tried switching to different setting on both and have not gotten the 720 timeline to go in sync.

Hi Gregory,
Are you talking about 720p50 or 720p25?
The EX does both and there are some issues when mixing both Time-bases
Another thing to consider, Is that 720p25 is not standard. The Kona must repeat frames to put out 720p50.

OK, don’t know why I was on 25/50; any way I guess it happens the same issues when working with p30/p60 stuff.
You are not mixing both time-base.
The only thing I see again, is that 720p29’97 is not standard. The Kona must duplicate the frames to put out p60. Not sure if this could be causing the sync drift.

So how can I fix that without editing in a 1080 timeline?
I want to shoot at 720p 29.97 so that I can overcrank the footage. The camera won’t overcrank when shooting at 1080, so I shoot the interviews only at 1080 and the b-roll at 720. Both at 29.97 with the 720 footage being over cranked. I like having the interviews at 1080 so that I can zoom into them in post to add moves or crop. But I don’t want to edit the b-roll at 1080.

Then you shouldn’t be having this issue.
I make constantly every kind of combinations with 1080p25, 720p25/50 and p25 overcranked (p25/50/60). As I told you FC only behaves funny when dropping p50 stuff on a p25 sequence. Time-base issues.
May be some wrong metadata on the 720 stuff?
You could try to fix this with QT Player:
– Open a clip and “Select All”.
– Open a New Window.
– Paste.
Save as SelfContained.
That’s simple and may work.
That put all the Video, Audio and TC info on a new QT container.
