I filmed a play with the Canon XHA1S hooked up to a Rode condenser mic using the phantom power feature on the camera. Unfortunately, I also had the on-board mic recording sound. This resulted in hearing some audience coughing, throat clearing and other bothersome noise. My question is this;
can I separate those two sources in final cut pro 7 (studio) and mute one of them? Or am I doomed to having those sounds on the output that will be DVD. -

If the sound from the Rode was recorded onto a different channel from the onboard mic (eg. Rode on L Channel, On-board on R Channel), you can turn one of the channels off and pan the remaining channel to the center. And you’ll have to make sure you don’t import the audio as stereo either

Unlink the sound if it was captured/imported as stereo before deleting or muting the camera mic and panning as Rob said.

Thanks for the quick answer. I imported as a stereo file. Do I have to re-import as a mono file, changing capture settings as mono sound?

No. FCP can work with both Stereo and Mono sound.So that shouldn’t be the issue. I suppose it doesn’t hurt to give it a shot, though.

Thanks again Rob and Michael. I would rather not have to import it again. What would be the steps to separate those sources in Final Cut Pro 7 ? I am just a rank beginner. I am both thankful and awed by the advice available to me.
