New Mac Pro – Final Cut crashes A LOT
I’ve read through some of the forum topics on this subject but wondering if anyone could lend some insight to my problem beyond starting over from scratch or just waiting for Final Cut X…
Just bought a new Mac Pro 8 Core and installed four 2 terabyte, 5400rpm drives and 64GB of RAM. I copied over all my old files and applications from my previous Macintosh G5 tower that I’ve had since 2005. So now I’m running Final Cut 6.0.6 on OS 10.6.7.
I’m pumped to have the new computer and especially excited to see what’s possible with the new Final Cut X coming out soon. The problem is I have a project I need to do immediately and Final Cut keeps crashing!
Here some more details:
• I shoot mostly in XDCAM EX format and that is the setting for my timelines as well (XDCAM EX 720p30)
• I am usually dealing with 1,000’s of video files, several sequences, some of which can be 10 or more hours long
• Final Cut is crashing when I’m scrolling through long timelines, cutting and pasting clips from one timeline to anotherThis wasn’t really an issue on my old G5. Every once in a great while Final Cut would crash but now I can’t keep it open more than 10 minutes without something bugging and the program closing.

1) What is going on? Does anyone know from reading the crash log?
2) I had no issues editing in the XDCAM format and timeline on the old G5 computer, is this the issue now? Does the Mac Pro not like XDCAM or something?

You can copy data, but you can’t copy applications from a G5 to an Intel computer and hope that it will run properly.
Your best bet at this point is to download FCS Remover from http://www.digitalrebellion.com and use it to completely remove FCS. Then reinstall the suite from original discs. Also, make sure to update both the OS and FCS several times by running Apple>>Software Update until you get the message that every is up to date.

I am having similar problems.
I thought I had it solved but the problems are back. One solution to try may be to check if you are running 64bit kernel, as this can interfere with FCP as it is a 32bit application.
To find this out go to : about mac; more info; software and there will be a line saying ” 64bit kernel” and it will say yes or no. its quite easy to switch it off and it doesn’t effect any 64 bit programs you are running.
Now this DIDN’T fix my issues.
I am on a 12 Core Mac Pro with 6gb Ram
with the 5870 Graphics card.I have done a clean install of FCP 7 onto it and I find that when I run two screens after a few minutes the screen starts to judder. I get out of memory messages, when i try to render or export and at least once a day when I use the find tool the systems crashes. I have used FCP since 4.5 I have always run from Macbook Pros and just upgraded to Mac Pro but I feel like I have take a step backwards I know I dont have a lot of RAM but I also know that FCP cant use more the 2.4gb any way so it cant be that.
The problems seem to be aggravated when I use the second screen as a display, I tend to have clients in the edit and I have always used the screen to showcase my cuts to them. Does running this use more RAM?
Just to clarify I this is happening on multiple projects. I normally convert everything to prores 422 on this project I am using Pro 422 HQ at the behest of the producer, this is supposedly loved by FCP but I find that any overlays, simple text or images need to be rendered (sometimes, Red sometime Green never consistent)
I dont think the problem is hardware, I have seen enough posts out there to know that this is a fairly common problem, as i said earlier i thought i had is sorted with the 64bit kernel but the problem (while better) is still there.
Can anybody shed any light?

Flat out cannot do that as David says. You MUST do a clean install of all of your applications to the new tower.
Now that you’ve messed everything up, your best bet is to erase that hard drive and start all over again with a clean install of the Mac OS (from the discs that came with the computer), then install Final Cut Pro and all your other applications from their original discs.
Just cleaning off FCP and your applications wouldn’t really solve your problems I’m afraid.

Depending on what codec you’re trying to edit I think you will find these drives sluggish.
7200rpm constant speed drives would be the recommended norm for video. But hey, whatever works.Scott Sheriff

You should be suitably impressed…
