  Capture Whole DV tape and reconnect to clips

  I want to know if it’s possible to reconnect individual clips back to an entire tape’s capture.
  I’ve got 50 DV tapes that I need to re-ingest. Now that drives are cheap and large, I plan on capturing the entire tape instead of the individual clips that were created in the logging bins.

  So if I capture Tape 1 that has 50 clips labeled “Interview1, Interview2 all the way to Interview50” will it be able to reconnect those clips to 1 captured file? Or do I still need to re-capture all 50 clips?

  If the settings are identical on the capture and the timecode is good and continuous throughout the tape you should be good to go.

  When you mention settings on the capture do you mean the REEL name? I wanna make sure I do this correctly as it’s going to be a big job.

  The reel name should be right, but the media settings as well, audio and video, frame resolution and sample rate.

  If you have 50 individual clips that you previously captured in FCP, then tossed the media…and now you want to just capture the whole tape and reconnect those clips to that ONE file… FCP won’t do it. It will say the timecode and duration is wrong. FCP wants EXACT same timecode, duration, file name and reel number, or it freaks out.

  BUT…there is an application that will do this for you. And it is pretty slick. FCP RECONNECT:
