mini DV lossless server storage?
Posted by Michael Weiss on May 25, 2011 at 1:20 pmI like to store my mini DV via network on a local server. Which is the best codec to import the tapes with FCP 7.
Some of the tapes are poor quality (lowlight footage) and i like to edit them later with FCP

May 25, 2011 at 1:43 pmWhat do you do with the projects you edit?
If you output to DV tape, there is no point to using any other codec except DV.
If your final product is destined for something different, the answer might be different.

May 25, 2011 at 1:50 pmGood question. After a first raw cut i will put it back on DV tape (second storage).
Edited projects i like to see via my network on TV or Computer Monitor. MAybe i will create a DVD.
Is there something “universal”. If i import via FCP – standard configuration would be set to DV Pal, Alternatively someone told me to use Apple Pro Res codex e.g. 422 or 4444 to get later better results after editing.

May 25, 2011 at 2:08 pmProRes422 is good, but if your final product is on DV tape, everything gets recompressed to DV by the VTR when you record…so all the benefit is lost..get it?
but if you are multiple-purposing, then ProRes 422 may be of some benefit.
No need for ProResHQ or ProRes4444′ as DV is not of sufficient resolution to have any benefit.

May 25, 2011 at 2:13 pmThank`s for the information. Guess I will first import from tape via FCP and “DV Pal” setting.
Then start a project importing with ProRes422. Probably then I have to find a software or effect to try if I can improve the very poor quality of the lowligth scenes (without that all scenes are too dark and you can`t see anything). Then finishing the project and showing it on TV or computer monitor and hoping to see something better than before 😉
