  FCP 7 Audio dropout / lag / not working

  Hello everyone.

  I am baffled at this one.

  I’m using a “record scratch” audio piece from an Mp4 from an archive site.
  My main sequence is PR422. I’ve noticed that when I have a file it takes FCP a second or two to actually start playing the audio, i.e. the sound doesn’t kick in, there’s lag.

  For this particular piece of audio it sometimes doesn’t play at all until another music track underneath it kicks in. If I turn the scratch audio volume level all the way up it will work though intermittently cuts out.

  When I export the file (thinking it was internal to FCP it does the same thing.
  I’ve trashed the pref file and nothing seems to work. I’ve also exported, brought over to soundforge, re-saved and brought back in to no avail.
  Short of finding a new scratch sound does anyone know why FCP does this?

  Thanks for the reply,

  I actually have done that as many times and ways as possible. (I’ve worked in digital music for years) I.e. exported aiff out of FCP, opened in Soundforge, resaved as 48k 24bit wave and aiff, brought back into FCP thinking it would help and same issue.
  Last night I sent the clip to soundtrack thinking if I normalized it that would help,..same issue. Oddly I’ve noticed if I have a file “underneath” the static clip (ex. the music) it works,..though on it’s own it cuts out or doesn’t play (make sound) at all unless I turn the volume level all the way up…so strange.

  Perhaps there’s something with the audio drivers?

  Short of using a different audio clip, any other suggestions?

  Agreed! Fishy is certainly what it is,.Yep, tried that as well D, I”ve literally tried everything I can think of. I’m guessing it has something to do with the original audio from that mp4 file.

  Though when I created a new sequence I just dragged the audio “static” into it and same issue was occurring.
  I’ve read trashing the wave render files may help (?)..

  As I understand it you’re suggesting using QTP to export the aiff from the original mp4 mov? As opposed to exporting using FCP?

  Hello Dave,

  Thank you for your suggestions. I ended up using MPEG Streamclip (awesome program!) to export the audio in aiff from the original h.264 MPEG4 video, then after starting a new sequence I brought the audio in. Seemed to work a little better though still getting drop outs,..
  The archive site has 3 options for downloading the original archived movie,..
  h.264 MPEG4
  Ogg Video
  512Kb MPEG4

  I used the audio from the 1st. Could you recommend which one of these would be the least compressed?

  (Also the quicktime for 10.6 doesn’t have an aiff export (?)….)
