How do I make Mp4 ingests more workable.
On the project I’m working on at the moment and from time to time, I’m sent Mp4s which I have to incorporate into my timeline. Usually made up of DVCPro .movs or P2, working in pro res HQ on a 720 or 1080 timeline.
This really seems to make Final Cut labour and I’m having to constantly render and re-render when making adjustments with these Mp4s and switching to unlimited rt means that there’s too much judder to work properly.
I convert with any DVD converter, but that doesn’t have a .mov option and all the other converters that I’ve tried never give me satisfactory results.
So I’m wondering is it a conversion issue or should I be doing something else to the Mp4 before or even after I ingest?

Use Compressor to convert the MPEG-4 media to DVCPRO HD or whatever exact format and specs of the rest of your media.

Thanks Tom, however I can be a bit cumbersome with Compressor, any advice on bit rates and key frames and the like when I’m running it through?

Compressor has multiple Format presets. We convert all Mp4 material to Apple ProRes for edit. We simply use the preset provided by Apple with no changes.

You shouldn’t need to use Compressor or any other 3rd party applications. Final Cut Pro’s Log and Transfer works with most pro video formats.

Not MPEG-4 or H.264 unless something has changed in recent years.

Sorry, I misunderstood the original post – I thought he had P2 DVCPro HD files… but I think that’s the media he has already got which he is trying to match the Mp4’s to.
In which case, I concur. Using the Compressor presets is the answer. I sometimes find that Compressor becomes quite unresponsive when working with large amounts of h.264. In which case I use Mpeg Streamclip (which has a batch converter that not many people know about)

Even better, use presets that match your sequence settings. Generally ProRes.
