Caution….cross post on the AVid editing forum!

We have Standard Def uncompressed spots cut and color corrected on a Nitris at another facility. They will export the color corrected clips and we will do some effects in AE on Macs, render them out and get them back to the Nitris for final output.

What are the ideal export settings from the Nitris? What codec will the Nitris export? Is it one of the Avid uncompressed codecs? it is NOT HD so I assume it is not DnX.

On the Mac side we are using CS3 and have our head around the new video I/O settings, at least within our FCP to AE and back workflow on the Mac.

But we are having trouble with the Nitris to Mac AE and back….getting very odd color/gamma shifting. Could be their exports (tried Animation codec etc) but haven’t been successful, so we are looking for someone who has done it successfully and could basically guarantee a digital color match going back and forth. If you have worked out this workflow, I’d love to hear from you.

    Thanks all,

i can’t say that i’ve done extensive testing of this workflow, but i often use the old avid meridian 1:1 codec going from avid (pc) to ae (mac) and back to avid (pc).

the big thing you want out watch out for on avid (and many nles) is nle colorspace is normally yuv, ae is rgb. so, with most codecs, you need to make sure things get converted correctly… export from avid to rgb colorspace, render in ae normally, but make sure you import back into avid as rgb so avid will correctly handle the conversion.

with the avid meridian codec, the color space is included in the file so avid should correctly interpret the color space.

you should be able to download the latest avid codecs from avid.

i can’t guarantee this workflow will work for you (i don’t work on avid enough to know if it is flawless), but i think it should get you started in the right direction.

That is what I was thinking too…..use the Meridien codec. Especially because I can render it with an alpha. But I wonder if the DS Nitris can export to the Meridien codec? I was told that they couldn’t find the codec on their machine and that a clip that we provided to them in the Meridien codec would only play a white screen….indication that it wasn’t loaded on their DS.

    Thanks for the input…

they should be able to download it, or you could download the latest version and email it to them.

it’s an older codec, but it still works, and like you said it supports alpha and everything…. avid is also still updating it, i downloaded a universal binary version 4-6 months ago, so it is not a dead codec.
