P2 playback workflow problem in FCP
I’m having trouble with my playback after transferring my p2 video onto my hardrive. It plays clear and crisp on the log and transfer menu but after I get it on my timeline it plays glitchy and slow.
Here’s a video of my screen to see what it is doing exactly.

I appreciate any help, hopefully a simple fix.

#1 – your footage is interlaced, and computer monitors don’t display interlacing all that well. If you had a capture card and external monitor, you’d see that all was fine.
#2 – where is the footage stored? What type of drive? Connection type?

Well I ordered a 4tb hardrive that will be here tomorrow and it will have raid 0-5 capability so that’s what I plan on using. That was just transferring onto my local hardrive on my MacBook from my p2 card reader. I was just wondering why it plays normal in preview mode on the log and transfer but after it is actually saved it starts to do the glitchy interlaced thing. I noticed that when I change my field dominance to upper only nothing goes wrong but is that hurting the quality?

Your internal hard drive is too slow to play back the footage properly, and too busy with the OS. Never store media on your internal drive.
Wait, you are going directly from the card to FCP? You aren’t backing up first? DUDE! That’s RULE #1! Back up that footage…THEN import. You’ll need another drive that you will store the footage onto….the masters that is.

That’s interlacing, bud. It’s not 30p, it’s 24p with 3:2 pulldown. (1-2-3 progressive, 1-2 interlaced, it’s perfectly clear when frame by frame).
Set your viewer to 100% and the interlacing will look more normal, but it will still be there.
For everyone else, see how important an external monitor with a capture card is?

When you preview it, it’s playing back from the P2 card. After you import it, it’s playing back from your system HD. The HD is too slow to play it back properly.

Guys, hate to be a jerk, but this has nothing to do with disk speed. This clearly and plainly 3:2 pulldown.
Please put your viewer/canvas @ 100% and you will see what I am talking about.
