  • Multiclip source substitution woes…

    Hi all.

OK, so my understanding of the idiosyncracies of FCP Multiclip usage was never really challenged until now — until I tried to delegate the finishing of a project with a freelancer. I would sure appreciate some help solving the following problem:

    The project:

    2hr duration, 2-camera HD shoot.
Dual-system audio, everything synced successfully using Pluraleyes.

Rendered out each synced camera track (with replaced audio) as a REFERENCE MOVIE and then built a multiclip from those, two, imported ref movie sources. So now; 2hr duration, 2-angle multiclip to edit from.

All well and good. Hard drive space saved. Everything on one machine. FCP happy. Edit begins.

Freelancer employed. Project Media Managed to an external drive and handed over.

Freelancer performs multi-day edit, but fails to let me know that everytime he opens the edit project, FCP spends 20mins “searching for movie data in file “XYZ_Acam.mov”

Project returned to me for approval/finishing/polishing, where I see the problems. Render file pointers have been severed; should never build multiclips from reference movies etc etc. I know that now.

SO, I resolve to “fix” the problem by re-rendering the original, synced A-cam and B-cam tracks as SELF-CONTAINED movie sources and attempting to swap-out the troublesome REF movies used in the now-edited multiclip.

As you can probably guess, this hasn’t worked so well… Even though I am apparently able to reconnect the media as it appears in the project bin and even though the mutliclip seems to be using that reconnected media as its 2-angle sources… it’s obviously not, and all hell is broken loose.

I can still open the original edited project that references the REF movies, but IS THERE ANY WAY to tell FCP “No, dude, stop asking for the reference movies and use these (identical format; identical length) movs instead” and so retain the actual edit in the timeline?

hope that plea for help makes snse.

    Any help gratefully received.

Only thing I can think of is to collapse the mulitclips, then attempt a reconnection to the self contained movies of a duplicate of the original sequence.
