  FCP audio-video sync issues…DV ONLY!

  Hi – I looked and can’t seem to find the exact problem I’m having, I’m hoping one of you might have some ideas.

  I moved to HDV a couple years ago, and have no problems capturing HDV in sync using FCP 7 from my Sony M15AU. I went back to recapture some old DV tapes. The sync on the tapes themselves is fine. When capturing them using the M15AU there was a noticeable loss of sync, which became more noticeable over time.

  I still have an older DSR-11 which I hadn’t used much…so I pulled that out and used it instead. Same problem.

  I’ve been capturing HDV to 7200 RPM external hard drives via USB connections with no issue, likewise before I moved to FCP I was using external 7200 RPM USB drives with a Canopus, and never had any issues. I tried using the internal system drive and had the same issue – so it’s not drive-speed related.

  I have changed and played with most of the FCP capture settings, that hasn’t made a difference. I trashed the preferences and rebuilt them…that wasn’t it. I’m sure at this point that it’s FCP which is the problem but I can’t locate the issue.

  Would truly appreciate help on this. Thank you!

  You can’t use USB for Video Editing. You will have problems.
  Use Firewire or internal SATA.

  Hi Chris –

  Both the drive speed (7200 RPM) and the connection speed (USB2) aren’t the problem…I use the same USB drives consistently with no problems while working with HDV…it’s an issue with FCP related to the older DV tapes I’m now capturing. And again, even capturing to the internal system drive makes no difference either…but thanks, any other ideas?

  You must select the right audio sample rate (32khz or 48khz) for capture preset.
  If Your tape is for example 32khz and You capture it as 48khz You most likely will lose the lip sync after few minutes.

  Indeed…checked that also, all the tapes were recorded at 48khz, the capture preset is set to the same. Good thought. Anyone else?
