Question about Compressor
Posted by Colin Kelly on April 16, 2011 at 1:35 amI just sent my short film from FCP7 to Compressor. I just noticed something at the bottom left of the preview window. It say, “source: 1440X1080, 23.98”.
My entire project was shot on the Canon 7d and at 1980X1080. Why, in the Compressor preview window, would it say “source: 1440X1080, 23.98”?
Thank you for you responses in advance.

April 17, 2011 at 4:47 amI understand that, but that doesn’t help me. For some reason, my sequence settings show it as 1440X1080, but ALL of my clips frame size shows 1920X1080. Is there anyone out there that can give me a simple workflow under easy setup or sequence settings that will get me on the right track?

April 17, 2011 at 5:02 amI checked out the sequence settings and I cannot for the life of me figure out what to do. In easy set up, the first drop down is
Format
Do I leave this on all formats or change it?
Second drop down is
Rate:
Do I leave that at all rates or change that to 23.98?
Third drop down is
Use:
Which one of these do I use. I tried that apple ProRes 422 1080p, but it says under sequence preset that it is 1440X1080 24p. This is NOT CORRECT.
Please someone help. Im at my wits end.

April 17, 2011 at 12:26 pmHere is what I do when deal with Canon Mark II footage. Transcode original H.264 footage into ProRes 4444 or HQ, then edit it in FCP and transcode into any deliverable I might need. That’s my workflow. If you transcoded your footage into ProRes simply drag and drop clip in new sequence, will ya. FCP pops up and offer to use settings for the sequence that match your clip. Say yes. Next, open sequence settings tab and check out. Now you know how your settings must look.

April 17, 2011 at 2:58 pmThat makes sense, and that is my exact workflow (minus using 4444. Im using ProRes 422 (LT) as this is for web output only). But even when I drag my clip into the timeline and it asks me if I want it to match my clip, the sequence still remains at 1440X1080.

April 17, 2011 at 3:13 pmIn the menu Final Cut Pro>Easy Setup-
Format: This option lets you choose to “show only” certain formats to choose from in the “Use” dropdown. So leave it on show all if you want to be able to see all the choices, change it to HD if you only want to choose from the various HD formats etc..
Rate: Same deal as above. Choose the rates that show in the “Use” dropdown.
Use: This is where you choose what one to use. Your available choices are based on the above selections.
These settings do not change your current project, they only effect the new ones you create in the future.
In the menu Final Cut Pro>Audio/video Settings-
Sequence preset: This is where you choose what a new sequence will be when you create one. These settings do not change your current project, they only effect the new ones you create in the future.
In the menu Sequence>Settings-
Here you choose the settings for the currently active sequence, this must match your video before you drop it on the timeline. Do so.

April 17, 2011 at 4:12 pmI assume there is nothing wrong with your footage and it’s 1920 by 1080 as you stated. Then go to your Home directory then inside it to: Library > Preferences
Drag com.apple.FinalCutPro.plist to the trash
Scroll down to the Final Cut Pro User Data folder
Drag Final Cut Pro 7.0 Prefs to the trash
Drag Final Cut Pro Obj Cache to the trash
Drag Final Cut Pro Prof Cache to the trash
Empty the trash
Open new project, import your footage and add clip to a sequence. Check sequence settings.Everest Mokaeff

April 17, 2011 at 4:33 pmThe only one I could find was “com.apple.RegFinalCutStudio.plist”.
Will this do anything to the projects that I am currently working on?

April 17, 2011 at 4:56 pmNope. If you trash exact files I pointed to, you’d do no harm to any project. These are cache files for FCP. After deletion it’d be as if you opened application first time – you face a welcome window with easy set-up presets. Trashing pref files helps when something abnormal is happening.
