Broadcast safe QT re-import problem
Posted by Sarah Bright on April 15, 2011 at 3:56 pmRecently we have had troubles trying to find a way to create broadcast safe films using FCP and Color.
The obvious FCP broadcast safe filter was no good and even when we ran them through color it was still failing in places.We have graded before broadcast filter and/ or color.
Anyway, we found that after the grade, if we re-imported into FCP and put the ‘Levels’ filter on, it capped everything, which resulted in a complete pass with no peaks 😀 Happy Days!?!?
Yes, happy days UNTIL –We exported this as a QT (Current settings – we work in DVCPro HD 1080i50) and then re-imported it into the same project onto the same timeline, then ran it through the QAR!.
This showed peaks again…?!??!
Has anyone got an answer for this and how we can avoid it??

April 15, 2011 at 4:14 pmWhat do you mean by broadcast safe? White level not exceeding 100, black not below zero and saturation at 100 percent?
This is the first time I hear something about FCP or Color being unable to sustain broadcast safe settings for a clip. I find your report unsubstantiated.Everest Mokaeff

April 15, 2011 at 4:25 pmTried the RGB Limit filter too, that seems to be ineffective.
Our error report is showing that in places, our Luma is under.
Usually between -1 and -5.Any more advice would be appreciated.

April 15, 2011 at 4:29 pmTry nesting your sequence, and then apply broadcast safe filter as a last step – switch rgb limit off, then apply the rgb limit filter – you’ll have to tweak settings to what you need, this works for us. There seems to be a bug in fcp with the broadcast safe filter and multiple video layers, try it then render and check your scopes… hence the reason to nest.

FCs Broadcast safe filter at default setting isn’t Broadcast safe at all.
You need to customize the filter (which, BTW, has not a real Chroma control).
The embed RGB limiter is not to trust (no setting for Black clipping).Broadcast Specs may differ from system to system. To avoid any risks set the “Broadcast Safe” filter “Very” or “Extremely Conservative”, and after apply the “RGB Limit” filter.

April 15, 2011 at 4:56 pmHmmmmmmm, we’ve tried those things already.
Including different ordering of filters. We try not to use the broadcast safe filter in FCP, it seems to do nothing at all.
We tried The Grading Sweet 3 Broadcast filter too, with no joy.
We’re running through a blackmagic box with video playback set at 8 bit (also tried 10 bit).We’re left scratching our heads as to why, when we put the level filter on we have no peaks or errors but when we export the qt from the sequence with the filter on and re-import it, we get errors?
It’s like the export forgets to carry the filter information over too. -

this why I wanted to know what was meant by failure. I did output untold number of digital masters for broadcasting and never had had serious problems with default settings of FCP or Color broadcast filter. Of course, you might point to lax broadcast standards I have to comply with but they can’t render filter ineffective per se, do they?Everest Mokaeff

No really lax standards, but since we work in digital components, systems are more flexible than in the analog times.One of the problems of the FCs Broadcast safe filter is that was designed in the Analog times.
As you can see, shows values for Composite video signal (133 is the legal limit of Y’ + Chroma).
In the other hand its doesn’t have real Chroma (Saturation) control, although this is not much important because there is no way to monitor Chroma in FC.
