  • Audio drift on import, after export

Posted by Cade Muhlig on April 3, 2011 at 6:12 am

I wanted to export a whole sequence in AIFF, tweak it a little, then reimport it into FCP.
Im working in a ProRes 422 29.97 sequence with footage colored in Color.
When I export the audio the length is the same as the original sequence, but when I try to import the same audio file back in, it stretches an extra 2 sec, per 1/2 hr, hence, out of sync with video

I’ve tried exporting using compressor, quicktime, and reference quicktime, but the problem is the reimport

This was discussed a few years ago, with no apparent solution.

    Anyone? Thanks

    Nope.
This is discussed weekly, without any clear cause / solution inside FCP.
You can export to Wave and use WaveAgent to change the samplerate.
Fixes the duration without changing the quality.

    [Bouke Vahl] “Nope.

    Nope,
This is discussed almost daily and the cause is usually having a different frame rate set in the default project to the current project. Either that or it is wrong sample rate. Matt Lyon did an excellent tutorial a while back that explains it all and also offers an XML solution to fixing incorrect assets. In this case read the second half of the tutorial where it is explained how to correctly import audio assets into FCP.

    https://library.creativecow.net/lyon_matt/fixing-fcp-assets/1

Why FCP bothers to stamp a frame rate is a small mystery. The big mystery is that it uses the default project settings not current. This behaviour is a bug and Apple should have fixed it with FCP7.

Changing sample rate is not the correct approach to fixing a time stamp problem.

    aaaahhhhh….
    nice!

(but i still believe there is no harm in changing the sample rate.
It is just putting a mistake on a mistake, but it won’t harm quality.)

However, doing it right from the start surely is the way to go 🙂

Yes this worked! Thank You, and thanks to the writer of the tutorial

I don’t know how, but but the default sequence was set to 25 frames, and I’ve never worked in PAL but once or twice.

Hope this gets fixed, but at least I know what’s going on now
