Super Slow Mac/FC System
Posted by Thomas Hughes on March 24, 2011 at 10:25 pmI’ve got a MacPro 2.1, Quad Core Intel Xeon running Mac OSX 10.6.5 w/8 gigs RAM. FC version 7.0.3.
Everything is working fine if I existed in slow-motion world. When I click on a project to open it, then when it’s open, anything I click on, I get the spinning wheel for about 5-10 minutes. Likewise if I’m trying to edit, it works fine but takes about 5 mins for every click of the mouse. I’ve rebooted several times. I’ve unhooked the external hard drive, the Aja Kona 3 box and made sure that the internet is not hooked up, so it’s just the Mac and FC. Up until this started happening a few hours ago, this suite has been fantastic for years. Any suggestions?

March 24, 2011 at 10:38 pmPerform the following routine maintenance procedures:
1) Fix permissions on the system drive using Apple Disk Utility
2) Trash prefs
3) Run Disk Warrior on all drives.

March 24, 2011 at 11:25 pmThanks David. We repaired the permissions, trashed the FC preferences then rebooted and it’s still having the same problem. Is Disc Warrior something I can download, or do I need to buy a disc at Best Buy? tx

You used to have to buy it at a Mac store or have the disc delivered, but you can download it now. Here’s the link: https://www.Alsoft.com/Buy/index.html
It’s possible that some hardware component in your system has gone south an that Disk Warrior may not be the answer, but it’s certainly worth having in your arsenal anyway. If it doesn’t work report back here…
BTW, you might also want to try uninstalling and reinstalling your AJA drivers, they can go south and bring FCP to a crawl.

March 25, 2011 at 12:36 amDisk Warrior is a life saver. But note that in order to repair your system drive with the downloadable version (rather than an actual Disk Warrior DVD), you need to be able to boot from a Mac OS X install disk and then run the Disk Warrior software from a drive other than the one you’re repairing. The latest downloaded version apparently doesn’t include the files necessary to make a startup disk (earlier versions did).

March 25, 2011 at 1:19 amWith the help of AJA support, we checked everything regarding the AJA card and installed the latest update for Kona 3. He said we were way behind in the updates. We rebooted, still didn’t fix the problem. He said that sometimes in FC a project or even a sequence can become corrupted and cause the whole system to slow way down. Any suggestions on how to check that?
Also, when FC reboots, the first thing one sees is the reboot window. It says “Final Cut Pro”. Below that, “Licensed to”. Below that “Version…” and below that it cycles through all the components of FC that are loading. Since I’ve been having this problem, when rebooting, it cycles to “Loading Pro Applications Integration…”. It sticks on that forever, like 5-10 mins, before loading everything else. The AJA tech was very familiar with FC. When I told him that the FC reboot was getting stuck on that particular thing. He chuckled and said he’d never heard of “Loading Pro Applications Integration…”. Is that any indication of what might be wrong? tx

March 25, 2011 at 3:48 amTry FCS Maintenance Pack (has a few apps that could potentially diagnose and fix the issue). And there\’s always a clean install of FCP and even your OS. Time consuming but effective.
