I’ve duplicated a 640×480 sequence and changed the frame size to 640×380. I set the Frame Size to Custom to get the 640×380. The Pixel Aspect Ratio is NTSC-CCIR 601/DV (720×480). If I change it to “Square”, the footage stretches.
I have tried exporting this sequence numerous times both in Compressor and directly from FCP, changed all the settings I could find for controlling the Aspect Ratio, but I can’t get the image to export without stretching…seems like it’s defaulting to “Square” pixels.
I’ve exported this same sequence with the default 640×480 before with no problems. Not sure what’s going on here.
How do I export without the stretch? Using FCP 5.1.4.

Do not change your frame size. Let FCP do it for you. Choose Easy Setup DV/NTSC, check anamorphic if you shot widescreen. 640 x 380 is not a standard frame size.

Thanks for the response. The footage is old 4×3 shot on a DVX100A. The purpose of changing the frame size is to get a wider frame without letterboxing or stretching it…web only purposes.I like the way the frame looks, but FCP will not keep it at the pixel aspect I want. I’m wondering why this is happening.

What does that tell you? It wasn’t meant to be changed.
Export a SC QT movie and make a 640 x 480 or 320 x 240 h.264 for the web in Compressor.

I’ve done this successfully before, which is why I’m totally confused why it’s not working now. This is a 640×380 frame compressed with the right pixel aspect:

What are your sequence settings in FCP?
What are your Encoder settings for Video Format and your Geometry settings in Compressor?

Hi Eric,
Your 640×480 can’t be 4×3 unless is Square Pixels, but you are saying that is NTSC DV Pixels.
Then if is NTSC Pixels, 680×480 can’t be 4×3, neither 16×9.The clip you want to make “640×380-Square Pixels”, is neither 4×3.
So your original DV 4×3 picture was converted, probably for the web (?) to 640×480 Squared Pixels.
That’s is correct.
But you can’t convert 680×480 SQ to 680×380 SQ without distortion. You are crunching the picture.

I will try suggestions. Just to clarify, here’s the original video with original sequence setting of 720×480, re-sized out of FCP to 480×360 and converted to flash:
