Intel HD Graphics 3000 for FCP
Posted by Andre Luis on March 19, 2011 at 10:44 pmHi folks,
My macbook pro just died on me (R.I.P. 2007-2011) and I DESPERATELY need another on (lots of jobs stuck!).
Well, first of all, I live in Brazil and unfortunatelly apple products here a ridiculously expensive (while a MBP costs 1,500 in the U.S., here the same MBP costs about 3,000. Really). So, my only option in the moment would buy this 3,000, which would be the 13-inch i7 2.7 with Intel HD Graphics 3000.
The problem is: I use a lot of FCP. A lot of After Effects. And a lot of Modul8 (a VJ software which uses gpu acceleration). I used to do all that on a MBP core2duo 2.2, with ATI x1600 with 256mb. Will this Intel HD Graphics 3000 be too different from that?
Thanks!

March 20, 2011 at 3:05 amThe Intel graphics card doesn’t mean the minimum supported system requirements. From https://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/specs/ (emphasis mine):
Requirements to install all Final Cut Studio applications
- Mac computer with an Intel processor
- 1GB of RAM (2GB of RAM recommended when working with compressed HD and uncompressed SD sources; 4GB of RAM recommended when working with uncompressed HD sources)
- ATI or NVIDIA graphics processor (integrated Intel graphics processors not supported)
- 128MB of VRAM
- Display with 1280-by-800 resolution or higher
- Mac OS X v10.5.6 or later
- QuickTime 7.6 or later
- DVD drive for installation
- 4GB of disk space required to install all applications (Final Cut Pro, Color, DVD Studio Pro, Soundtrack Pro, Motion, Cinema Tools, Compressor, and Apple Qmaster)
- 46GB of disk space required for optional content
- 9GB for DVD Studio Pro content
- 7GB for Motion templates
- 22GB for audio content
- 8GB for LiveFonts
After Effects doesn’t use the GPU for rendering, so as long as you have the minimum resolution of 1280×900 [link], it should run.
I’ve never used Modul8, but I’d bet its performance would suffer noticeably the the integrated Intel graphics card.
Do you have the option of purchasing a refurbished machine? In the US, they’re usually 15-20% cheaper than new, but they carry the same warranty as a new machine.

March 20, 2011 at 3:36 amthanks for the reply Walter. I didn´t know the minimum specs for FCP. Well, that sort of says it by itself 🙁 🙁
my boss is gonna borrow me his mbp (which is just like mine who died today) until I can buy a new one.
Thanks for the help! -

March 20, 2011 at 12:22 pmChris, I´ll wait for someone to come to Brazil and deliver one for me. Shipping would be a bad choice, because it has 99% chance of being taxed at the customs, and by that I mean it would cost 50% more.

March 20, 2011 at 3:04 pmWell that sucks. Too bad I couldn’t ship it to you in a box labeled used clothes or something.
If I could get away here, I would deliver.

March 20, 2011 at 4:44 pmThank you so much Chris, you’re very kind!
Looks like now Apple is finally gonna build a manufacturer plant here in Brazil. So, apple products will probably cost much less than today, with these ridiculous import taxes.

July 29, 2014 at 4:15 pmJust to clarify, the HD Graphics 3000 is the only Intel processor that does meet the FCP requirements…
Minimum System Requirements
– Mac computer with an Intel processor
– 1GB of RAM (2GB of RAM recommended when working with compressed HD and uncompressed SD sources; 4GB of RAM recommended when working with uncompressed HD sources)
– ATI or NVIDIA graphics processor. Integrated Intel graphics processors are not supported except the Intel HD Graphics 3000.
– 128MB of VRAM
– Display with 1280-by-800 resolution or higher
– Mac OS X v10.5.6 or later
– QuickTime 7.6 or latersource: https://support.apple.com/kb/SP635
But does anyone have experience trying to edit with this? I’m about to invest in a MBA 13″ to do some light editing on the road when I’m away from my Mac Pro.
