OK so this is going to a “d’uH moment” when I get the answer, or maybe I’m just working too long on this project…

I am cleaning up a project and re-arranging comps in the timeline by dragging them. I can not convince AE7 to save them in that order – when I save and re-open the project, they comps are back in the previous order (alphabetic order.)

Even if I “save as” with a different file name, the new project opens with the original order.

I think I had this work the desired way before. Other than renaming the comps with a “01,” “02,” etc, is there a way to have the project open with the comps in the order I need?

[jim] “I am cleaning up a project and re-arranging comps in the timeline by dragging them.”

If you are arranging comps in the Timeline and they are bing re-arranged that is a serious problem. Layers should always remain in the same order in the timeline when you open the project. if the layer stack order is shifting around, contact adobe support, or at least attempt a re-install.

If on the other hand, you mean they are being re-arranged in the project panel (where all comps and files are displayed), then short of using a alphabetical or numerical system, or maybe using “`” or “*” – then no, I don’t know of a way to do this.

AE would be a disaster to look through if the files were not forced into some sort of logical order.

I have to be honest with you, and maybe it’s because I’m on a PC, but I have no idea how it is AE is allowing you to change the order of comps in the project panel (other than dropping them into folders). Maye this is a feature of the Mac version, but I’ve never seen it on Windows and it doesn’t make sense to me.

Perhaps I am misunderstanding your issue all together.

I was thinking that he was referring to the multiple timeline tabs. Say you have 3 comps open, you have three tabs along the top of the timeline allowing you to switch between comps quickly. Dragging and dropping the tabs you can re-order them to make working with them more efficient. I think the normal behavior is to keep the order you have it in when you save it…
However, I know that AE will reset the order to alphabetical if the workspace is reloaded (ie. one comp view, two comp views, etc…) so that could be where his problem lies.

that was an irritating feature of afx 7. no way around it. it’s fixed in afx 8 i believe.

    Aharon,

I was actually referring to the multiple timeline tabs.

Based on the other answers, it looks like this is a new ‘feature’ of AE7.

    Maybe fixed in CS3??
