  Interlaced / Progressive

  Hi there,

  I hope someone might be able to help me out with this and would really appreciate any guidance that could be given.
  I’m currently making a film and shooting on the Sony HVR-Z5. I have been shooting interlaced so far and I’m happy with the results.

  I’m wondering whether really I should be shooting in progressive? I assume that de-interlacing the film (either in final cut or export/compressor) once edited will get rid of the motion lines?
  What do you think, should I stick with interlaced or switch to progressive?

  If your main target is broadcast / DVD or any other ‘ real ‘ home TV set, stay with interlaced.
  If you need video for the web, go progressive 29.97 or 23.976
  If you want to have both NTSC and PAL rates, and/or perhaps go to the web, and/or go to the theatre, go progressive 23.976
  If in doubt, go 23.976.
  But if you are sure the end result is for NTSC home use on ‘ normal ‘ TV sets, stick to interlaced 29.97.

  In Europe it’s different, as the time base difference between shoot and broadcast output is killing us.
  But the other way around it’s a no brainer.

  That’s interesting to know about using progressive for web video as I also run a online digital video news website….
