Directly Capturing from Camera?
This is more of a camera question, but there wasn’t a specific forum for that so I thought I’d try here.
I work at a company that shoots auditions. They way we do this is using a DV camera but instead of using tape, we capture directly to the computer (via firewire) as the camera is rolling.
My question is this: I have a friend starting her own taping service and she is looking into something like the sony handycam–but I don’t know if that type of camera can be plugged directly into the computer and captured in the same way a DV camera can because it creates video files on a card rather than video on a tape.
if this camera can’t, is there any similar grade/quality/priced cameras that will?

If the camera has a firewire port then most likely yes, you can plug that into the comp. and record the signal live.
USB will not.

You may want to look into some kind of capture box that will allow you to plug your camera feed directly, then convert to a compact or other format. Many times, these boxes will allow you to use just about any video/audio feed to make files for editing or for online/offline use. It depends on what you can spend or how far you want to go.

A camera with HDMI can be plugged into an Atomos Ninja or AJA Ki range of recorders. Both record directly to disk in ProRes format and can be immediately connected to Final Cut to edit or dump files to disk.
I would think this sort of capture to be more robust than firewire to a computer as an uncontrolled device.
