16×9 aspect ratio stretched horizontally
Hello,
I am sure that this has been mentioned several times on this site but I can’t find a definitive answer anywhere. This is my issue:
I am using the Sony HDR-SR55V camcorder to record video. At times I am also using my wifes D90 mixed in. I have noticed that sometimes (not all of the time) I am seeing the video in FCP 7 and the aspect ratio is perfect but when sent to Compressor and exported (with the same settings every time) I am getting aspect ratio squeezing horizontally. the video is much wider and people are shorter and fatter. It has done it twice now and I can’t figure out what I have done in my editing process that is causing it. Things look great in FCP 7 but look like crap when exported. I have researched and researched with no fix found. I would like to think that I know my way pretty darn well around tech stuff but this is really throwing me for a loop.
Any help would be appreciated. Let me know if you need further information about my situation so that you can help me better.

The file exported out of FCP – does it look correct? If so, then it has to be your compressor settings.

You were correct! Looks fine with exported with quicktime. I just wish that I could get rid of the letterboxing. Don’t understand why it did it though. It would work with the same settings sometimes, actually most of the time. Any suggestion of the correct settings to use if I am trying to keep the 720 quality but upload to vimeo/youtube? I researched it online and got my current settings but obviously they are not consistent. Find that strange though. I would like to get rid of the letterboxing as well. I don’t like it when I have to see them when the video plays with quicktime. Any suggestions on that as well. It really kills the quicktime player “full window” playback feature.

I suggest you re-read the manual about anamorphic. I suspect you are not setting the anamorphic flag correctly on sequences and shots.

Thanks for the suggestion but the more I think about it…I don’t think that any of that is going to help. Here are two examples of what I am getting when I export via compressor. If it were my settings….why would it be right sometimes and not the other. I just don’t understand what I am doing in FC to get the different out comes.
Keep in mind. I am in no means a professional. So don’t judge the video quality. I am just trying to learn something new.
On this first video, I did everything like I always do but it changed with compressor export.
On this second video, same approach, same compressor settings, and it came out fine.
Could it be some edits that I am doing that could be distorting things. What should the settings be under the motion, distort tab?

If it was the distort tab, the problem would be obvious in FCP and the exported quicktime. I suspect it might be in the way the sequence anamorphic flag is set or it is a setting in Compressor. When you get it right, save the setting and apply it next time

So, this is what else I have found. I have opened up the projects that were working and the projects that were not. I have cross examined the settings the best that I could. Nothing looks out of the ordinary in that area. But, the one that was coming out crappy was having black bars above and below in the canvas in FC. The one that was not. Just the usual grey background in the canvas. I started over with a new project/new sequence and reimported the video clips that were in the bad project. the black bars were gone this time. When I open up new projects, FC says that I should adjust my settings to what my video is and I always do. Is there a way to set that up as the default so that it is always those settings up starting the application?
