60i Image Quality
Hello,
I’m a real rookie so go easy on me. I shoot outdoor video (dog training) with lots of action and swish pans. I’ve found I need to shoot 60i to capture all the movement. I’ve read, however, that during the editing process, substantial image quality is lost compared to 30p. Can someone clarify my thoughts on this and many thanks!

We could get into a lot of arguments here comparing spatial to temporal resolution. In a nutshell, for fast action with a lot of camera movement, 60i will look smoother than 30p.
That said, if your images are only for web or computer playback then progressive images will have less problems than interlaced. So where is the primary viewing market for your programs? Web then progressive, DVD/broadcast then interlaced.

Not really, that’s only part of the story…
While resolution of a non-interlaced (progressive) image is indeed doubled at any moment in time, as you’ve discovered, there are many elements that comprise the moving image, and motion is an important one of them. Capturing smooth motion is just as important as the image resolution in your case, and you would do well to stay at 60i when filming action such as dogs in motion.
However, as Chris states, if your stuff is primarily Web-based, then 30p is a good bet if your camera handles it nicely.

Many thanks for the professional advice. I feel like a minor league player amongst all stars. The final destination of the video is for TV broadcast. I’m making that huge leap this fall so I have much to learn.
