• Apple Final Cut Pro Legacy

  4:4:4 Virgin (How to?)

  I have never edited anything with ‘HD SR’ footage with 4:4:4, and have an opportunity to work with someone who has just transferred 16mm film negative footage to this format. The intention is to cut a short 6min piece, and keep it digital, i.e. of course not go back to film negative, etc.

  I have a MacBook Pro 2.6 GHx Intel Core 2 Duo with 4gigs memory, running OS 10.6.6. And, ProMax SataMax Raid (FW800)drives (basic 7200rpm drives, as well as LaCie or WD 7200rpm drives).

  Taking it for granted that this relatively weak set up will not push 4:4:4 footage around in Final Cut Pro 6.0.6, what can I do if anything?

  Firewire 800 will not push 4:4:4, not by a long shot. Was it transferred to Pro Res 4444? I don’t believe you can easily work with that format with about at least Final Cut Pro 7. You will want a RAID setup, and not a small one like a Lacie Big Disk or G-Raid, you want a four way stripe, or a RAID 5.

  At the very minimum, upgrade your system to Final Cut Studio 3 (for Final Cut 7). Since you’re not going to film out, you might consider converting your footage to Pro Res or Pro Res HQ, since the data rates are considerably lower. They’ll still be hard on a firewire drive, but more manageable.

  Thanks for the response Richard S.! I didn’t think it would supply the juice, and converting to Pro Res HQ is the option on the table.

  Otherwise, there may have to be another system flying in to meet this project’s needs. Thanks again! All the best from the far north (Stockholm), sometimes missing SoCal…
