MPEG-2 transport stream specs – possible with Compressor?
I’ve been asked to deliver an MPEG-2 transport stream to be used in a CCTV system.
I have a feeling that meeting these specs might require using something like Telestream Episode, but I just wanted to confirm.
The client provided the following specs (reproduced verbatim below):
Encapsulation: MPEG-2 Transport Stream
Video Format: 4:2:0
Video Bitrate: 3-5Mbps. Rate Control: CBR
Audio Encoding: MP3 Audio (This cannot be AC3 audio)
Audio Bit Rate: 128-192Kbps. You can go with 128Kbps for now.
Audio Sample Rate: 48kHz
Field Dominance: This should not matter. The television will natively handle this.
Resolution: 704×480 (This is an ATSC standard resolution)Is it possible to produce an m2t with these specs using Compressor?
I’m also skeptical of the statement that the field dominance shouldn’t matter. I’m in NTSC land, so I’m assuming it should be lower field first.

I can’t see anything that’s going to be a problem there (Picture format in Compressor offers you PAL/NTSC, rather than 4:2:0/anything else, but don’t worry about it – MPEG2 is 4:2:0 by default unless you dig in on another page and change it). I do agree with your reservation about field dominance – leaving it in auto SHOULD be fine, but I’ve had Compressor make dodgy MPEGs so I prefer to always specify.

As far as I know, you can’t change the audio to MP3 with Compressor so you might need to use Episode. But, try it with Compressor and see if they accept it. Never know and would save you from buying another program. I believe turning off “YUV 4:2:2: Color encoding” under the Extras tab will make it 4:2:0 but check on the compression forums to make sure. And I agree with Andrew about setting the Field Dominance yourself, (lower in your case) as I’ve also had issues when on auto.

Unfortunately Compressor won’t allow me to lower the bit rate below 10 Mbps, and the client is asking for 3-5 Mbps.
Regarding the requested oddball 704×480 resolution: In such cases, should the output simply be scaled to these dimensions, or should it be cropped?
I appreciate the assistance.

I usually crop to keep the aspect ratio correct but make sure you aren’t cutting off something you want to keep around the edges.
