Unrendered clips in timeline
Hi everyone,
I have a problem with my Final Cut Express. When I drag a clip to my time line my canvas says that it is ‘unrendered’. I can watch the video in the ‘viewer’ before I enter my In and Out point but when I place the footage on the timeline I can’t watch it. Im not that familiar with Final Cut, but I am sure that I shouldnt have to render it to watch it.
The item properties of the clips I am editing and the item properties of the sequence I am editing in match, they are both “1280 x 720”.
The file type is mp4. The film is shot with a Kodak Play Touch. I have tried converting the files so that they are compatible with a mac, but all that does is that it changes the format on the sequence to 640 x 480.
I would greatly appreciate some help as I purchased a mac mainly for the reason that I wanted to edit on Final Cut. Thank you!

Download MPEG Streamclip (google it, it’s free) then use that application to transcode the footage and keep the size intact. It should be transcoded to the AIC codec to work with Express. Then match the sequence settings to those AIC transcoded files. Sounds like you’ve transcoded your files to DV. (that’s why the file size change).

Where do I find the AIC codec? As far as I see I only have the option to export it to QuickTime, DV, AVI and MPEG-4

Select QuickTime as the format, and then select “Apple Intermediate Codec” as the compression setting.

Hi, I stumbled upon this page recently and it has been REALLY helpful, thanks.
I have something more to ask, leading on from this, if that is ok. What should the frame size be for fcp?
Currently when exporting from Mpeg Streamclip the box comes up for AIC and also has various other settings. The default setting is 1280×720 but fcp then tells me it needs to change the clip settings.
I’m just wondering what I should set it as – these are films shot in HD for website use/YouTube.
