I am having a Scooby mystery with the Time Code.
    This is the setup:
Final Cut Studio (3) with the following Device Control: AJA IoHD: 25 Panasonic VTR – Capture/Input: AJA IoHD 525 29.97 DV
    AJA io HD
    Panasonic AJ-HD1400

When I playback the tape the Time Code is off and it seems gap increases over time.
For example the Deck will read 00:00:17:08 and Final Cut Pro reads 00:00:14:13.
The second does roll on frame 30 on both the Deck and Final Cut.

Now I can’t say how the tape was captured to camera as in 25 frames, 30 frames and etc… and the tape did come with Time Code breaks. Just a bad tape recording?

    What could cause this?

It’s very important to know what your frame rate of the tape is as that is the only way to have Final Cut import the timecode correctly. Right now, you have your Device Control settings set to 25 Panasonic (for 25fps) and your capture is set to 29.97fps so this is wrong. If your deck has an LCD, see what the timecode is playing back on it or just ask the person who shot it what it is.

Make sure your Device Control settings and Capture settings match and that should get you going.

The only way to get the TC from FC on tape is controlling the desk by RS-422.
This should explain the TC discrepancies if you are using FW.
The jumps on TC can only point to a job badly done.

The AJA IoHD: 25 Panasonic VTR is the only setting that will control the Deck. ( I do not recall seeing a 29.97 or 30 Panasonic… but I will check tomorrow)
But as long as my Capture input is correct there should be no issues.
The AJA IoHD is wired over Firewire 800 and the Deck is being controlled over RS-422.
Anyway, I suspected also the tape was junk so I tried another tape and the time code matched on both readers.

So I would say my bad 🙂 but will keep eye on it. 😉
