Does anyone know any good glossary sites that clearly list the different kinds of video artifacts, noise, motion blurs one can encounter while editing and monitoring… the reasons and hopefully solutions? Even being able to identify them correctly is a great first step to solving them.

As well as reading such a list would perhaps be a Vimeo, YouTube… type link to be to visually match things going on.

I’d very much appreciate any suggestions.

Start with Google, check Wiki (compression artifacts). Follow links to images of many of the typical artifacts from within this wiki –

It looks like a good starting point. Others will have favorites

Quantel’s factbook isn’t specifically about errors but is a great general glossary, here:

I’ve had some good technical stuff from test gear manufacturers in the past. What I’ve got is a bit out of date now, but if you search through the websites of Tektronics, HardingFPA, etc, I expect that you’ll find useful stuff there (in fact, now you’ve reminded me I’ll probably have another look myself).

Thank you for your feedback. I’ve been specifically trying to figure out and solve some artifacting I’m noticing on my monitors. It appears at times during some clips during panning motion, as tiny flickers in certain areas. I’m not sure how to exactly diagnose it. Whether it’s mosquitoing, or due to my consumer monitor (32″ 1080P Sony Bravia on an HDMI feed), or what and how to fix it? This is on a ProRes 30p sequence.

Any help solving this would be really appreciated.
