Could you please give me some advice on the following project. This is what I have so far.

v4 A fish shaped rim (photoshop)
    v3 A scene (video)
v2 A fish shaped matte (same shape as rim)
    v1 A scene (video)

So it is like looking through a fish shaped window from one outer scene to another inner scene.
Now I want to make the fish (rim and matte) move it’s body as in swimming. Is the only way to do this to create numerous slightly changed mattes and rims per second?

I would post this in the Motion forum. I am sure you would get some help there. Motion has “behaviours” which can take the pain out of animating wiggling fish!

Could you apply a filter with some distortion effect, and set key frames to get an adequate effect?

If not, it does sound like you’re trying to do animation that would require at least a few different variations on the shape. Is it just wriggling in place, or is it moving across the screen? The length of each image (probably less than one second, but at least two frames) will depend upon how quickly you want the fish to be moving, but you could probably get away with just six or seven different images, and just repeat them.
