  I’m brand new to FCP after 10+ Discreet EDIT years and am finding the going rough.

  FCP won’t let me group the faders as in EDIT and I’m trying to get the number of faders down to something I can manage without having to make so many passes at setting music levels. I have been unable to get FCP to render the audio. The progress window that comes up during rendering flashes as if FCP thought about doing it and then said nope. I’ve tried every permutation of the render options in the Sequence submenus and none has worked for audio. Rendering video doesn’t have this problem. It’s probably something simple but I’m at a loss to know what. Anyone have any suggestions?

  As to getting the audio tracks down to fewer, is there another way to accomplish this beyond rendering. There are some references in the documentation to doing it in STPro but I haven’t found anything specific. Any ideas here?

  Go to the User Preferences and in the GENERAL tab, under real time audio mixing…switch that from 8 tracks to like 24…36. The more RAM you have, the higher you can do this.

  For rendering, go to the SEQUENCE menu, choose RENDER ALL…and under AUDIO, choose FOR PLAYBACK.

  Don’t know about grouping tracks in the mixer. I highlight the tracks on the Timeline and press CMD and the brackets [ and ] to adjust the audio up and down 3db, and the – and + to adjust 1db.

  Thanks Shane.

  I tried the render as you described and the same results: The progress window flashes on an off and nothing happens. Surely I’m missing something but after a lot of searching I don’t know what it might be.

  Normally, FCP will only render audio files if it thinks it needs to. If you really want to FORCE a render, then press “command-option-r” to render a mixdown.

  But as Shane says, if you set your realtime audio mixing high enough, you should rarely have to render. Even on my old G5 I would set it to between 32-48 tracks and I can’t remember ever exceeding the system’s realtime limit.

  If you still can’t render, try changing the location of your audio render files in the FCP preferences. It could be there is a write permission issue on the directory you currently have selected. (Or use the “get info” window in the finder to fix the read/write settings of the folder).
