Using a few HDV clips in a DV project
I have a DV project and have just acquired a few short HDV clips that I wish to include. How should I best handle this?

I think I’d just put them in the sequence as they are and render. If it comes out OK, it is OK… if not, might try Compressor to transcode them to DV.

Ben- Jerry has a good way to do it. But there may be a quicker way. Many of the HDV decks and cameras have a down convert menu option that converts the HDV to DV and outputs through firewire. That way all of your media will match in FCP and saves you render/conversion time. The ‘hardware’ downconversion may also be better quality.

Thanks everyone for the help. I ended up just capturing it and putting it on lime line to see what happened. Surprisingly it actually played with out rendering which is great (although it has a green line so obviously need rendering before before outputting).
I even put a levels filter on and increased gamma and that played without rendering. Strange thing is when I put a saturation filter on it then needed rendering. I then did the same to a DV clip and it also played without rendering for levels but needed rendering for saturation.
Kind of odd. When I used Avid DV express 10 years ago it seemed to be able to do most things in realtime. I would of thought FCP would of caught up by now. I also use Sony Vegas which does everything in realtime, however it does need a lot of CPU. Avid seemed to be able to do this on a single 1Ghz core (for DV)!.

Alto’s suggestion is a great one. Shoulda thought of this myself, but just don’t do a lot of HDV editing.
That said, I really think the next generation of software will be a whole different story with RT etc…
