  Exporting 640×480 Video for DVD

  I have a video that was shot in 640×480 VGA 60fps mode on my Canon 7D. It was transcoded to Apple ProRes, then exported out of FCP as an H.264. The file plays just like it should.

  Now, when I try to burn that onto a DVD I get a couple problems. Firstly, the image appears a little stretched horizontally. And secondly, that 60fps really “video” looking image seems to now appear to look a little more like some kind of 24/30 fps hybrid; a little more video-ey than 24 but definitely not the way it looks in FCP or the original H.264 file.

  So my question is, how can I burn this onto a DVD while retaining the frame size as well as the 60fps, “video” look?

  Also, is it at all possible to burn this onto a playable DVD while also putting a 16×9 24P video file on the same disc and having them both play as they should?

  Hi Bill,
  The only standard for NTSC DVDs is 720×480 DV pixels (4×3 or 16×9) and the time base: 29,97 or 23,98.

  First of all: Work with your Prores movie to get the MPEG-2 (don’t try to convert the H264).
  – If your clip is p30, you need to conform it to 29/97 (CinemaTools).
  Then In Compressor apply the “Best Quality 90 minutes “preset. In the Inspector set:
  – NTSC
  – 29,97
  – 4×3
  – Progressive.
  Set the “Control Frame: ON”
  – Resize Filter: BEST
  -Output Fields: Same as source.
