  • FCP “out of memory” when rendering

    Hi –
I don’t have all the facts, but 3 FCP systems on MAC Pro’s. All working for over 6 months. In the last 2 days, whenever they try to render out their effects or layers, they get “out of memory” error.
The systems are in a different city, so I cannot sit in front of the system to see what stupid thing is going on.

I tell client to go to System Settings, and change where the files render to, from the external drive array to the internal MAC HD just for this test, and even when they do this, and “render all”, they get “out of memory”.

    What’s going on here ?

Have you searched this forum for Memory error? It has come up many times. The error message comes up under a variety of instance. The most common one in my experience is a jpeg or graphic image that has greater than 4k pixels in any plane.

Sometimes a particular combo of FX filters that might be graphics card intensive are too much to handle. Lots of helpful hints to solve these various issues have been posted before.

    HI There

Im running an iMac OSX 10.6.5
Processor: 3.06 GHz Intel core 2 Duo
    Mem: 4GB DDR3

Also getting out of memory messages.
Ive been working with still but have been nesting motion sequences in my timeline and not the stills themselves.
These messages happen when I try render in FCP and when I send the sequence straight to compressor.

    Thanks

Do these systems perhaps have Decklink cards installed for output?
I have seen a LOT of crap with latest Decklink drivers.
    Including Out of Memory.

Check if the problem persists with External video set to OFF.

    What kind of footage/sequence settings?

Also don’t set your UNDO levels to high.
FCP can only adress 3GB ram.

Also check your Still Cache. Shouldn’t be higher than 10/30%

Good call Paul. Looks like it’s my decklink that’s causing my issues here too.

Will post this on the BlackMagic forum.

I have a 12 core w. 12gb ram and I just started getting the error too, when starting to render. Have to restart FCP.

    OS X 10.6.6
    FCP7.0.3
