DVD proofs workflow
We are having a pulsating compression artifact when we produce DVD’s when proofing our TV program.
This occurs using “share” or sending to compressor and burning.My associate says there are quite a few posts about this, but hasn’t found a solid answer.
We are looking for a fast workflow to produce DVD’s of a half hour TV program that has the same quality as our station master.
We like the background feature compressor affords us, but for some reason can’t nail the settings to achieve the results we need.
We are on quick computers, a media server and the latest FCP studio software.

Fast way: Output via a capture card to a DVD recorder in real time. No encoding/authoring needed.
Slightly slower: Export a reference QT from your sequence. Take that into Compressor…choose the DVD preset. Make sure to enable QMASTER to turn on all your processors to tackle the job (if you have more than two). Then take into DVD SP.

If you are only putting 30 minutes on a DVD change the encoding preset to CBR method and it will encode in less then real time and you don’t even need QMaster set up. On a fast MacPro it should take on more than 20 minutes to encode. This is fastest if you make the QT as Shane says but also speeds up the Share function.
But the real question is what do you mean by “Pulsating?” Do you have a field order issue? If you are going from a HD interlace to SD DVD you need to make sure that your are keeping the field order at Upper so you don’t introduce the issue. IF that is not the case can you describe it better.

I think I might know what he’s describing. I’ve seen this myself once or twice, and I’ve occasionally heard similar complaints from others. Occasionally, depending on the footage, Compressor’s MPEG-2 output can have regularly repeating, visible blocking artifacts on a single frame about every 15 frames or so (probably coinciding with the closed GOP structure). I think “pulsating” is how some people describe the regular pattern of blocking.
I’m not sure if this only occurs only in VBR encodes, but some things to try would be:
1. Use CBR encoding instead of VBR
2. Select open (vs. closed) GOP structure in the Encoder pane of the Inspector tab. If you’re encoding assets for multi-angle content, a closed GOP structure is necessary.
I don’t really run into this issue myself, as I use BitVice and not Compressor, but I have seen this before. I’m not sure what causes it, but it’s definitely real.
