a Deinterlacing question
I have just completed a very big project and am tired of working on it. I just realized that I did not Deinterlace the video. My footage I shote at 24 frames with a panasonic hvx 200 or I shot with the sony I think at more then 24 frames. This is my question. With todays HD technology is deinteracing still important?
Also, most of my video is just set down interviews. Their is no movement does this have to be deinterace.
Also I made a large movie of the entire project. Can I just deinterlace the entire movie at once or do I have to go in and deinterace all the little video interviews.If I have to deinterace then I have about another week to two to do all of this because I have already created the dvds and this is a very big project and I don’t know what to do.

Couple of questions:
What is the framerate of your sequence? Is the footage from the hvx in fcp 24 or 29.97 (24 with a 2:3 pulldown)? What framerate is the Sony camera that you used? Is it interlaced 60i or 24 with a pulldown.
Worrying about interlaced material is still very important in hd. If you don’t worry about it, it can cause problems down the road.

Yea I shot 24 frames and edited the project in 24 frames. With the sony I cannot remember the exact frames speed but I think it was not shot at 24 frames. But I edited the footage in the same sequence as the footage shot by the panasonic camera in 24 frames. Also most of the footage is just footage of talking heads. I have very little footage of movement. But I do have lots of graphics and photos.

You might try applying a deinterlace filter to the Sony footage to be safe. Much better than deinterlacing the whole show.

Where is the video being shown/ released. If it is for broadcast TV in HD or SD, it will likely be broadcast interlaced. Deinterlacing does throw away some resolution so you need a reason to do it which may be wrong depending on how the footage will be distributed.

If you shot native 24p (24pN mode on the Panasonic HVX-200) and edited in a 24p sequence (23.98), there is no need to deinterlace. Your footage is progressive, not interlaced. Deinterlacing is only necessary when footage is shot and edited interlaced and is being produced for web delivery.

I only plan on replicating a thousand dvds for my family. It might go on the internet some day. This is just a family project but i do want the best quality because this will be a keepsake. Also I did shoot some stuff on the sony not at 24p but I think at 29.97 and put it into the 24 p timeline. I hope that was ok.
I watch the stuff on my hd tv and just don’t get why I should put the effort into deinterlacing if I can’t see the difference on my tv. I think the only difference is that it might make my project look more film like if I do it.

The only way deinterlacing would make your video look like film is if your film was shot at half resolution.
However, if you’re putting interlaced material on a progressive timeline and you’re not seeing any interlace issues, then somethings either wrong with your TV or wrong with your eyesight.
