Hey forum. With more work happening in HD requiring advanced filters and color correction, I’m running into tons of system time spent rendering.

My question: what do you typically charge a client when one of your workstations is tied up on a 24 hour rendering job? I’ve got one hour sequences right now that are rendering out at 20-30 hours each on my new Mac Pro with a six core Westmere processor and loads of RAM, and the client has about 14 of them. They are providing one Mac to help render, but my new system is completely tied up with this.

I think at least 15% of my normal rate is fare for having a system gridlocked with this stuff. But need input from other professionals out there. THANKS!

First off your question is better suited got the business forum as your question really had nothing to do with FCP.

As for your question. I would charge your normal full day rate. You cannot use the machine to do other work so they pay for a full day.

I agree with Zane about what you have charge.
You may do an special price because is a multi-job, but you are not simply renting your station.
Ask on the Business forum, they are more aware about tis kind of questions.

+1 to Zane and Raphael’s answers.

I guess that’ll be the consensus view, you’re effectively barred from doing other work so you should be paid for your time even if your not actually working (it’s certainly what my agency would say).

    Hi,

Not many people are aware of this awesome little app that allows you open and work with TWO instances of FCP on your machine simultaneously – allowing you to render one project while editing another [or whatever]!!!
Yes, this may slow down the render and/or edit somewhat, but you’ll be able to edit on the machine whilst rendering a different project.

I use this ALL the time – Big time saver.

Then you should charge double 🙂

If that application works it would be amazing.

Thanks for the input on the rates. I’ve got two systems, but one is a Windows machine so I can’t do editing work while rendering. And you’re right – it isn’t simply a machine rental. It’s more than that.
