Best workflow for Macpro to Macbook Pro and vice versa
Firstly, I am very glad to have found these forums!
Thank you to anyone who takes the time out of their day to reply.
By the way, I did try the search function first.I currently have built up an edit suite at home which is great for anything I throw at it.
However, working in the news industry, I am always out on the road and don’t always get a lot of free time at home to do my personal projects.I’m trying to suss out the best way to start taking projects off my raid and transferring them to my mac book pro (2.66Ghz i7, 8GB DDR3).
I’ve tried through media manager making an offline project, however the clips don’t seem to re-compress and re-appear in the project.
Is it better to batch convert with compressor the files on my capture scratch to something more manageable and then to replace those clips with hi-res versions when completed and ready to render out on my desktop system?
Obviously, being out on the road, disk space is a limitation.
The vision I’m predominately dealing with is off both a canon 5D and Sony PMW-EX3..

You need to use the RECOMPRESS option, and make a NEW project. Then take the sequence from that new project back to your main system, and reconnect to the full res version. What codec are you trying to recompress to? Does everything have a REEL number? They need to.

Compressor adds a name to the footage, so reconnecting will be a nightmare. And manually deleting that extra name will be time consuming. Media Manager is best for this. Watch this:

Yes I did search the forums, next time I’ll remember to search the tutorials also.
Your video was very helpful and I now have a solid understanding.
I’m thinking of using the prores proxy codec as I only need to organize the edit via laptop with a portable hard drive.Thanks again!

Another option to Shane’s great advice (as he actually answered the question you were asking) is, why even go to the trouble of an “offline” version?? Both XDCAM and ProRes are highly efficient codecs and they take relatively little space on a hard drive. Neither require the speed a RAID. Get a bus powered firewire 800 LaCie Rugged portable drive ($120 for a 500 gig drive on Amazon) and just take your project with you at full res. Will save you a ton of time.

I have to say, I was thinking the same thing all along as I read this thread. Why add variables into the equation? Spend your time being creative rather than recreating a job you’ve essentially already completed.

The new macbook pro with FCS2 seems to have trouble playing out my timeline with xdcam ex 720p/50 or prores422 off my lacie rugged using the firewire 800 port. I don’t like wasting time rendering when all I’d like to do is cut a package in a hurry as I have a couple to do during a day.
Maybe I need to look into my FCP setup?
