  Minimum drive speed for DPX or Uncompressed 10bit

  Just a quick question regarding drive speed.

  We are getting DPX files for our online.

  What is the minimum drive speed required for this?

  We have a MacPro 8-Core w/ 8 GB RAM

  We need better than esata, right? At least a RAID setup?

  What frame rate and pixel size?

  The free AJA data rate calulator gives you info on file size and data rates required for lots of different formats. Knowing the data rate required, you can also use disk speed test utils from Blackmagic or AJA.

  I don’t get it.
  If you are an online shop that works with DPX, how come you don’t know this?

  I have a feeling you will encounter a few other things as well.

  But, the math is simple.
  file size per frame * fps * 1.2 (little room to spare) per stream you want to play back.
  That means for 30 fps 2k about 324 mB (note the capital B) per second.

  It is not uncommon NOT to be able to playback in RT, but use them just to conform, while rendering to another codec for preview.

  You will not be able to handle DPX frames over esata.
  2K-DPX frames are 12+ MB per frame so 300+ MBps is required to handle realtime playback.
